Mangaung Unite arrived at Mthatha Stadium on 1 June as Free State champions and the Group B representative carrying the highest pre-tournament expectations. They left a week later with the playoff campaign over, the points hauled back by a disciplinary deduction before kick-off, and a 2-1 defeat to FC Ravens cementing the worst possible start to the group stage.
What happened before kick-off
The Lesotho-national-with-an-SA-ID dispute that had hung over the Bloemfontein club since May caught up with them in Mthatha. Mangaung Unite were docked points for fielding an allegedly ineligible player — defender Alfred Mosoeu — during the Free State provincial campaign, a sanction the club is contesting but which left them on the back foot before a ball had been kicked. Media liaison Orapeleng Manopole continued to dismiss the underlying allegation as “baseless”, insisting Mosoeu was born in South Africa and holds a legitimate ID. SAFA was not persuaded.
Match Day 1 — Ravens 2 Mangaung Unite 1 (3 June)
The points deduction made the opening fixture a must-win. FC Ravens, the Eastern Cape representatives and effectively the host club at Mthatha Stadium, played like a side that knew it. Ravens scored twice without reply before half-time. Mangaung pulled one back after the break but never fully threatened the equaliser. The 2-1 defeat, combined with the docked points, ended their chances of finishing in the top two of Group B before the second fixture had even been played.
What followed against Sea Point Swifts
The Match Day 3 fixture against eventual finalists Hope FC’s group rivals Sea Point Swifts (Western Cape) was therefore a dead rubber for Mangaung, with the route to the Motsepe Foundation Championship already shut. The Free State side acquitted themselves better in that match, but the result no longer mattered for promotion. Group B was won, in the end, by Hope FC, who went on to lift the national title at Mthatha Stadium on Sunday.
What this means for the off-season
The promotion route via the national playoffs is closed. Mangaung Unite must now decide whether to appeal the points deduction — there has been talk of taking the Mosoeu ruling to the SAFA appeals committee — and whether to rebuild around the same core for another tilt at Free State next season. The provincial title was their best year in the club’s history. Losing it like this is the kind of result that defines what happens next.
